Welcome to St. Paul’s UCC

Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ is a part of the Penn Central Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC), which encompasses a total of over 230 churches. Since its official founding in 1765, the St. Paul’s congregation has been worshipping at its current location since the mid-19th century.

We stand on the premises of the Reformation through our heritage in the German Reformed Church and the later Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957, the Evangelical Reformed Church merged with the Congregational Christian Church to form the UCC, which is a united and uniting church. The UCC’s motto is taken directly from scripture: “that they all may be one” (from the Gospel of John, ch.17, v.21).

Our mission statement directs that “St. Paul’s is being called to plant seeds and water them, faithfully believing God will provide.” We are led to plant seeds of faith throughout our communities, via ministries and personal interactions. Our mission is drawn in part from Scripture: the apostle Paul’s direction to the church at Corinth that we are all servants of God and, although we, like the namesake of our congregation, plant the seeds, God is the one who makes them grow (I Cor. ch. 6, vv. 5–8). The allusion to water also references our town’s historic roots, as Schaefferstown is home to the oldest chartered waterworks in the United States.

Godly Play

Are you searching for a new and unique way for both you and your children to worship God? Consider St. Paul’s Godly Play program for children ages 4 to 12. While adults worship in our beautiful historic sanctuary, children can experience Bible stories and incorporate them into their daily lives through this Montessori-style learning environment.

What is Godly Play? The Godly Play Foundation describes its concept as “[teaching] children the art of using Christian language – parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action – [and] helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.” In plain words, Godly Play provides for children the same resources that St. Paul’s church provides for adults: interpretation and connection of Biblical stories and passages which allows them to better understand the truths of God’s Word and the actions He takes in our lives every day.
